Blue Island

(cheryl lynne skinner)
released on the Shades of Blue CD
It seems like light years from the Kentucky Bluegrass to a beautiful seaport on a deep harbor on the southeastern coast of the Caribbean Island at the foot of the luscious Blue Mountains---“Jamaica” but not in my mind. This soundscape was created from this poem originally penned to be lyrics.

A combination sound on the Triton keyboard topped with percussion and sampled water sounds laid the foundation for this soundscape. I wanted the bass flute & melody to set the tone of exotic romance. This also gave the arrangement a sense of movement and excitement. At the end I used runs in the flute to simulate flowing waves. The ending phrase is repeated 3 times, each time dropping one beat at the end to hint of interruption and unpredictability of incoming waves over the sampled water sound effect track.
There is an island
where there's tropic sun
where the midnight fun's just begun
We'll go walkin' hand in hand
at my command
on the island

We could be by the sea you and me baby
Take a chance on romance, we could dance by the sea baby
We could be by the sea
