This songa, an Afro-Cuban style of music, is based on the 2+3 rumba clave. This repeated rhythm underlies the music. This piece is all about the rhythm! The idea for this composition came from the Triton keyboard pre- programmed sound “Triton Bay”. This piano patch has an implied steel pan drum, brass and songa percussion blended into one. I later added piano, flute, sax and trumpets to fill this arrangement. I taught at a bilingual (Spanish/English) elementary school in Chicago and became intrigued with Latin rhythms & music. The tutti licks or phrases commonly used in Latin big band music are applied with the opening lick. This is featured again early in the arrangement. The conga solo embellished by flute shows the compatibility of flute & percussion.
