This piece is dedicated to my brother John Phillips Skinner & nephew John Phillips Skinner, Jr. I guess it is a family affair because until I was a guest artist with my sister Colette Skinner Aly and her trio at Yvette in Chicago I had never played the blues on piano. I learned a lot from pianist/vocalist Colette, bassist Billy Mitchell and drummer Avreeyl Ra during my stint in the Windy City. My stomach would be tied in knots each night before I would hit the bandstand because I am not a pianist in the traditional jazz sense. Nevertheless, jp’s blues is a product of that period.
