This year has been very unpredictable with mounds of snow slowing us down to take advantage of some needed rest. Speaking of rest and relaxation as promised there is some meditation music in the Music section for those of you who want to partake. As promised each week I am making one track of the Shades of Blue available in the long version so you can hear the full track. Last week was Lapis Lazuli and this week will be Sapphire. I want to shout out a special thanks to iTunes Australia for the music downloads. Each and every download makes a difference.
Peace,
Cheryl Lynne Skinner

A MOMENT OF TRUTH

Here we are February 1, 2009 celebrating Black History Month. As I reflect back on the tremendous courage and faith of my ancestors I become overwhelmed with emotion. Although I was a little girl when people were marching and sacrificing their lives for equality I felt the impact of the struggles in my own personal experience. I will share a “moment of truth”.

In elementary school I remember going to what was then called “Leeds Theater” Winchester, KY’s only movie theater. African Americans could only enter through the side door and be seated in the balcony. If you wanted snacks you had to go back down the stairs, through the side entrance, back outside and enter the front lobby to purchase popcorn.

Later in my high school days integration laws kicked in and we were allowed to choose any seat on the main floor of Leeds Theater. At that time I don’t think I understood the significance of this step forward.

As an adult the Leads Theater was transformed into the Winchester Center for the Performing Arts. When I went back home in early 2000 to perform a concert I found my name on the marquee. I had come full circle in that space in my lifetime. I took a photograph of that marquee because it represents what an honor, privilege and celebration of freedom to even be able to perform for you. Through the actions of so many our dreams are made possible and even my voice can be heard. Soon I will be performing again in promotion for Shades of Blue. I hope to see you in a venue no matter how large or small.

Today residing in the metropolitan Washington DC area I celebrate the election of the first African American President of the United States. Yes, with God, All things are possible!

Cheryl Lynne Skinner

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

THE HOLY BIBLE

Tis the season to be jolly! Once again thanks for all your support this year. At cherylynneskinner.com I am happy to finally announce the release of “Shades of Blue” the contemporary flute CD.
SHADES OF BLUE

Shades of Blue” is a CD celebrating the “Blues” form and its tone color. The word blue is so rich”¦. The only true original American Music Form is jazz which is derived from the “Blues” form. In my journey to “find my own voice,” I have traveled and lived in various states in the U.S. but I have always ventured back “home” to my Ky. roots for extended periods of time. In a search for “identity” and following the lead of the Afrilachian Poets, I began to explore everything around me with intense scrutiny. I remembered gospel at Broadway Baptist Church, classical music in high school, Motown as a teen, jazz as an adult professional, Bluegrass & country on the radio and of course the Kentucky Derby (even though I never ride horses). I asked myself: Where am I in all that? For me I kept coming back to the same common denominator, the basics, the “Blues”. Even after researching bluegrass music which uses the banjo as its primary instrument the facts are best expressed in the “Encarta Encyclopedia”:
“ ...In some cases, African musical traditions have blended into American culture with little notice. The “banjo” now associated primarily with bluegrass music popular among white Southerners, was originally an instrument used in African religious ceremonies. Southern slaves adapted the instrument to suit secular (nonreligious) musical styles in the 18th and 19th centuries...”
Ironically, in the 19th century according to the Kentucky Derby Museum in 1875, the first Derby, 11 of the 12 jockeys were African American including the winning jockey, Oliver Lewis. The “Blues” and the African American footprints are imprinted all over Ky. history. I have found a great sense of pride from the African American influences and accomplishments in Ky. Regardless of where I go, “Shades of Blue” is a celebration of my roots and results from seeds planted 40 years ago in my birthplace Winchester, Ky. located in the “Heart of the Bluegrass”. In this project I have made musical tributes to some of the powerful individuals and traditions rooted in Ky. from an African American perspective.

I collaborated with visual artists Ashi Bey, www.artistsites.org/ashibey/, Sandra Charles, www.picturetrail.com/sandracharles ,and Paulina Constancia, www.paulinaconstancia.com on this project. The results are amazing and in the Memories Section.

THE SHADES OF BLUE COLLECTION
A collection of Contemporary M.U.S.E.
Music Unleashed from Soul Experience

1.
